What you can download from Facebook

Videos, Reels and Watch videos come with a list of qualities. A public post can hold several videos and photos, and each of them is listed on its own.

How to download a Facebook video

  1. In the Facebook app, open the video or Reel, tap Share, then Copy link. On a computer, copy the address of the video, Reel or post.
  2. Paste the link into the box above and press Download.
  3. Pick a quality, the audio or a photo.
  4. Save the file. Some files are ready right away; others are prepared on the OpenDown server first, and the page shows the progress.
Which links work

Share links (facebook.com/share/...), fb.watch links and normal facebook.com links to a video, Reel or post are all accepted. For Instagram Reels, use the Instagram downloader.

Quality and formats

Facebook keeps most videos in several resolutions, and the result lists one file for each, so you can pick a small file or the sharpest one. The highest quality depends on what was uploaded.

Some qualities come as one ready file. For the others, Facebook stores the picture and the sound apart, and the OpenDown server joins them into one MP4 first. Facebook also stores some qualities in the VP9 format; those are converted to H.264 so the MP4 plays on every device, which takes longer.

When the sound is stored separately, you can also save it on its own as an M4A file.

Links that cannot be downloaded

  • Anything you need to log in to see: posts shared with friends only, private groups and restricted pages.
  • Stories: Facebook shows them only to logged-in viewers, so they usually cannot be downloaded.
  • Live videos still on air: there is no complete video to download yet.
  • Deleted videos: the link no longer leads to a video.
  • Videos Facebook limits by age or country: you have to log in or be in the right country to watch them.
  • Profile and page links: paste the link of one video, Reel or post.

Saving on iPhone and Android

  • iPhone and iPad: Safari saves the file to the Downloads folder in the Files app. To add a video to Photos, open it in Files, tap Share, then Save Video. For a photo, tap Save Image instead.
  • Android: Chrome saves the file to the Downloads folder, and most gallery apps show it there.
  • Computer: the file goes to your browser's usual download folder.
Before you repost

Keep downloads for personal use, and ask the rights holder before you repost them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download private Facebook videos?

No. Videos limited to friends or to a private group cannot be downloaded. OpenDown never asks for your Facebook password and does not use your Facebook account.

Can I download Facebook Reels?

Yes. Copy the Reel link and paste it above. Reels are saved as MP4, like other videos.

Why is there no HD or 1080p option?

The list shows what Facebook keeps for that video. If a video was uploaded in low quality, only low qualities are offered.

Can I save only the sound?

Yes, when Facebook stores the sound of the video separately. Pick the M4A file in the result.

It says private or restricted, but the video is public. Why?

Facebook sometimes shows a login page instead of the video, even for public videos. If this happens, try again a little later.

Do posts in public groups work?

Yes. Paste the link of the post in the group. Posts in private groups need a login and do not work.
