What you can download from Instagram

OpenDown works with links to public Instagram posts: Reels, feed videos, photo posts and carousels. A carousel needs only one link, and every slide in it is listed as its own file. Links with /p/, /reel/ or /tv/ work.

Threads is a separate app with its own page, the Threads downloader.

How to download an Instagram video

  1. In the Instagram app, tap the share icon under the Reel or post, then Copy link. On a computer, copy the address of the post page.
  2. Paste the link into the box above and press Download.
  3. Pick the video or photo you want. In a carousel, every slide has its own entry.
  4. Save the file. Instagram files are ready right away, with nothing to wait for.

Quality and formats

For each video, OpenDown saves the MP4 copy Instagram uses for playback, as it is, without re-encoding.

The sound is inside the MP4. There is no separate audio-only file for Instagram.

Photos come from the largest version Instagram offers for the post. OpenDown adds no watermark or logo to anything it saves.

Links that cannot be downloaded

  • Posts from private accounts: OpenDown cannot see them, even if you follow the account.
  • Stories and Highlights: OpenDown does not support them.
  • Profile links: open one post and copy its link instead.
  • Age-restricted and other login-only posts: Instagram shows them only to logged-in users.
  • Live broadcasts: OpenDown does not support them.
  • Deleted or archived posts: the link no longer leads to a post.

Saving on iPhone and Android

  • iPhone and iPad: Safari saves the file to the Downloads folder in the Files app. To add it to Photos, open it in Files, tap Share, then Save Video or Save Image.
  • Android: Chrome saves the file to the Downloads folder, and most gallery apps show it there.
  • Computer: the file goes to your browser's usual download folder.
  • Inside the Instagram app: if nothing saves, open this page in Safari or Chrome and try again.
Before you repost

Keep downloads for personal use, and ask the rights holder before you repost them.

Frequently asked questions

Does the downloaded Reel have a watermark?

OpenDown saves the video file Instagram plays and adds nothing to it. A logo or text the creator put into the video itself stays, because it is part of the picture.

Can I save every photo in a carousel?

Yes. Paste the carousel link once and each photo and video appears as its own file, so you can save the ones you want.

Can I download Instagram Stories?

No. OpenDown works with links to posts, Reels and carousels. Story, Highlight and profile links are not supported.

Can I get only the audio of a Reel?

Not from Instagram links. The sound is saved inside the MP4, and a video editor can export it as a separate track if you need one.

Why does it say the media is unavailable?

The post is private or deleted, or Instagram did not return it to a logged-out visitor. If the post opens in a private browser window without logging in, wait a minute and try again.

Can I download posts from a private account?

No. OpenDown only reads public posts, the ones anyone can see without logging in. Posts from private accounts cannot be downloaded.
