How to download an X video
- On X, tap the share icon under the post, then Copy link. On a computer, you can also copy the address of the post page.
- Paste the link into the box above and press Download.
- Pick the video, GIF or photo you want.
- Save the file. Files from X are ready right away.
Quality and formats
X keeps several versions of every video at different sizes. OpenDown takes the one with the highest bitrate and saves it without re-encoding, so each video gives one file instead of a list of sizes.
X turns GIFs into short MP4 videos when they are posted, and that MP4 is what you get. It plays in any video player.
Photos are requested at the largest size X serves, up to 4096 pixels on the longer side, and saved as JPG.
Links that cannot be downloaded
- Posts from protected accounts: only approved followers can see them.
- Deleted posts and posts from suspended accounts: the link no longer leads to a post.
- Profile, list and Spaces links: open the post and copy its own link.
- Live broadcasts: OpenDown does not support them.
Saving on iPhone and Android
- iPhone and iPad: Safari saves the file to the Downloads folder in the Files app. To add it to Photos, open it in Files, tap Share, then Save Video or Save Image. GIFs arrive as short videos.
- Android: Chrome saves the file to the Downloads folder, and most gallery apps show it there.
- Computer: the file goes to your browser's usual download folder.
- Inside the X app: if nothing saves, open this page in Safari or Chrome and try again.
Keep downloads for personal use, and ask the rights holder before you repost them.
Frequently asked questions
Can I choose the video resolution?
No. For each video, OpenDown saves the version with the highest bitrate X provides, so there is one file per video.
Why is my GIF an MP4 file?
X converts every GIF to MP4 when it is posted, so the MP4 is the original file. Like the GIF on X, it has no sound.
Do I get every video and photo in a post?
Yes. Each photo, video and GIF in the post is listed, and you can save them one by one.
What happens with a quote post?
If the post you paste has no media of its own, OpenDown lists the media of the post it quotes.
Do twitter.com links still work?
Yes. Links from x.com, twitter.com and mobile.twitter.com all work the same way, and so do short t.co links that lead to a post.
